After what seems like no time at all, when in truth it's been over two years, London's Liquid Shit are back with their newest EP You Suffer For A Long Time. It was officially released digitally back in May before being released on tape in August via Dry Cough Records. I purchased a copy as soon as it was available just as I do with all Dry Cough releases. All I need now is their early Pillars Of Shit demo and my Liquid Shit discography to-date will be complete (honestly not collector scum!).

October’s been another frustratingly quiet month blog-wise and I’m not going to make any promises about greater productivity going forwards. I can’t anymore, as I don’t want to underdeliver. Personal woes aside though, hearing the sludgy tones of Liquid Shit on EP opener ‘Invidious Stench’ makes everything seem insignificant. Their sound is still very much fuelled by both sludge and death metal, but the melody that existed on previous EPs takes more of a centre stage, giving it more of an unnerving and subtly-cosmic sound as well.

Sludge has always been one of the strengths of heavy bands in the UK. I think it’s because of the gloomy state of our weather and our nation as a whole (especially in recent years). ‘Deepest Voids’ exhibits that point perfectly with slow tempos, torturous vocals and instrumentation that’s truly heavy, yet noise-laden too. That noise element adds even more to the band’s progression on this release.

The metallic intro to ‘Caustic Evocation’ radiates with black metal influence and it continues throughout the song, providing yet another layer to Liquid Shit’s already excellent delivery. There’s a lot to pick out here even if it’s not always obvious. What is obvious though is the quality. With more and more bands flooding onto the scene (so to speak), naturally, quality can get watered down. It’s all subjective at the end of the day but what I’m hearing so far is great.

Part of why I enjoy sludge so much (and to an extent powerviolence too) is the bass tones. ‘Punish Myself’ instantly reinvigorates that enjoyment with it’s very bass-forward sound and atmosphere. There’s an element of urgency to it that hasn’t been obvious on this EP before too, which harks back to Liquid Shit’s earlier output in some ways. I love it and it’s probably my favourite track so far.

The title-track closes the EP in enigmatic style. Pulling together all of the elements that have made up these five songs snd condensing them down slightly, providing a noisy, metallically piercing yet stubbornly down-tempo ending. In a time over the last few years where we have seen the depths that heavy bands go to (and I still don’t know if we’ve reached the true nadir), there’s a greater emphasis on atmosphere now and Liquid Shit are quickly mastering it to full affect.

With just over two months of 2025 still to go, I am so far behind on new releases but taking You Suffer For A Long Time in isolation, it’s a glorious release that ploughs the deepest furrow within our psyche. That’s why I keep coming back to sludge.

Less than twelve months after their last EP Untold Horrors in May 2022, London's Liquid Shit returned with their latest EP Repulsive Bodies. Self-released by the band in April 2023 while at the same time getting a tape pressing via Dry Cough Records, it sees Liquid Shit delving deeper into the world of noise and sludge, while also keeping their feet rooted in death metal. 

I absolutely loved Untold Horrors when it was released in 2022. I don’t know, there was just something so warming about it. So much so that I ordered a tape copy of Repulsive Bodies as soon as I could. I’m just sorry that it’s taken me a year to write about it. Today’s muggy atmosphere (coupled with the obligatory allergy flair-up) seems the like the perfect conditions to finally put my thoughts about this EP into print and as opener ‘Anxious Wretch’ lurches into life with slow/sludgy death metal, it makes me wonder if Liquid Shit will be the band that genuinely finds that elusive brown note. 

It’s not a fast song by any means but ‘Anxious Wretch’ acts as a precursor for what’s to come. What does come next is ‘Encrusted In Eschar’, which begins with a whole heap of proper doom/sludge-laden bass, leading to similarly downbeat instrumental all round. The vocals don’t give off any light either, in case you were wondering.

There’s a heavy psych influence in the riffs on ‘Untethered’, which might take you by surprise slightly but have no fear, they’re in absolutely the right place and add a huge amount to the song given how minimalist it is in places. I’m not saying that being minimalist is a bad thing (because it’s not) but I always felt like Liquid Shit had psych vibes in them when listening to Untold Horrors. 

Having said all that though, you couldn’t get a more apt song than Foul Occurrence. What you get here is another slow number that drags death metal into the deepest of places. It comes across as the bastard love child born of Cynic and Primitive Man. Picture that if you will. Slightly progressive/psychedelic death metal mixed with the nastiest sludge/doom.

Penultimate song ‘Mentally Dissected’ dials up the off-kilter musicianship and general noisiness even more, but manages to retain a healthy dose of what made old-school death/doom so engrossing during the song’s first half, before it descends into chaos later on. Closing with ‘Bound Forever To This Body’, unnerving samples lead to a cacophony of deep growls, screeching feedback and minimal yet crushing instrumentation.  

I really like the path that Liquid Shit have chosen to go down with their extreme sound. It would have been easy for them to just follow what others are doing but their music has a more experimental edge to it. This EP follows on from Untold Horrors perfectly and gives the slightest of glimpses into what may be coming next.

My latest Dry Cough Records purchase, Crypt Rot's An Ancient Summoning tape, arrived yesterday; however, I want to talk about the Liquid Shit tape Untold Horrors this evening. Liquid Shit is a death/doom/hardcore band from London that features former members of Dead Sea Fucking Scrolls, Cutting Pink With Knives, Navajo Code and many more from the UK's grind/hardcore community. Untold Horrors follows their 2020 EP Pillars Of Shit, which was released via Hominid Sounds.

In keeping with the current influx of death metal-leaning hardcore bands, Liquid Shit add themselves notably to the list with Untold Horrors. EP opener ‘Beyond Reproach’ has a sound unlike any other so far, where low growls are coupled with equally low and hypnotic hardcore riffs, drenched in noise and nerve-racking percussion. The one thing that I didn’t mention in the opener salvo was the dirty bass guitar sound. It’s prominent during ‘Riddled With Lesions’ and leads you into a slow, groovy song filled with sludge influences and psychedelic lead work. There’s also a saxophone present but it’s not overly audible amongst the noise.

‘Empty Gesture’ contains some epically piercing feedback that throws you into another song filled with claustrophobic, lumbering hardcore. The repeating riffs are utterly brilliant throughout and the noise levels on the recording remind me of the dread filled tones of the likes of November Coming Fire, Cholera and Sea Bastard. I read a tweet from the US heavy noise-rock band Whores earlier today extolling the talent in the UK scene. Hearing this EP adds to the excitement (if I’m allowed to say that!). EP closer ‘Death Absolute’ induces the same feeling as a psychological horror movie. It’s mostly instrumental with heaps of groove and noise. The vocals are used sparingly but enough to make their own final impact. 

Four songs that seem to zip by, with an infectious sound. Dry Cough’s output keeps getting better and Liquid Shit hit the spot in a way that’s unexpected yet really engrossing. Cracking stuff!
