How are you all coping with World Cup fever? Do you care? The UK media would have you believe that footy is taking over the US. I hope this is the first and last time we ever see "hydration breaks"!. Anyway, that tenuous opening bit only exists because the band I'm reviewing this evening come from Florida. 

Fingerswoventogether released their first music in 2024 in the form a 3 song demo that received a cdr pressing from Home To Heart and a tape pressing from ZBR sister label Tomb Tree. 2025 saw two lathe-cut releases; a 3-way split that included agile and Opposition Dolls from Blackheaven Records and Severed Records, followed by Severed again with a special Fall 2025 tour promo. Their newest EP came out in May.

I’m anxiously awaiting news on a record trade. I had a duplicate, agreed a trade with someone (from the US), packaged up and sent my half out last week,  now I’m just waiting to hear if the other half of the trade has been sent to me. Will I get it? Am I being stitched up? Should I have accepted the first offer I received? The answer will be shared in a future post. For now though, I’m distracting myself with Fingerswoventogether. This EP immediately sounds so retro as ’…And Now We’re Nothing’ begins. Guitar riffs that bring to mind System of a Down soon get swallowed up by intense and noisy screamo. Cymbal-led percussion crashes, guitars rumble and offer heaps of dissonance, while multiple voices deliver tortured screams, and heartfelt emotion.

‘Patience Through Penitence’ goes in different directions. At times it seems more restrained than the opener but more chaotic at others, while Fingerswoventogether enjoy a moment of slight reflection mid-way through.  They like introspective passages, which break up the heaviness and to be honest, they are very good at them. The flow of the song isn’t spoilt and the anxious riffage actually gains more impact because of them.

There’s a gentle beauty nestling within ‘Holding Onto Something Out of Arms Reach’ that continues after the initial build-up has finished. Even if the emoviolence is the main character here, the melody of the gentler instrumentation acts as an earthing, if that makes sense? It’s a somewhat brief song overall but is big enough to hold considerable weight.

I think back to metalcore when it was more about hardcore when listening to ‘This Was Never Yours to Take’. It just has such an energy and some loverly, intricate musicianship too. I’ve said this before recently but the level of talent that these newer screamo bands have is unbelievable. Pushing the standard up without damaging artistic integrity is what it’s all about.

Closing this EP with ‘One Glass Eye and Knives for Hands’, Fingerswoventogether provide one last epic song. Pulsing with sinister melodies, stark cries and honest musicianship, it brings a real sense of joy. From a noisy beginning to an ending filled with clarity, this EP is excellent. As ever, my write-up doesn’t do it justice. Spin it and try to grab a physical copy before they sell out.

I finally encountered posts by a vehemently hated AI bot on a certain social media platform the other day. I'm completely against companies training chatbots in social settings and through the use of people's legitimate art. Who knows where it'll end if it's allowed to keep on going. Thankfully, this blog and the bands I feature (to the best of my knowledge), stay away from AI. 

That brings me to the split 7" featuring US screamo/emoviolence bands Heaven Through Violence and Rosemary Nods Upon The Grave. Both bands are chock full of super talented people with Heaven Through Violence featuring members of Dysthymia, Castling and ...And Its Name Was Epyon (to name a few); while, Rosemary Nods Upon The Grave includes musicians who have performed in long.way.down, Street Sweeper and The Holy Ghost Tabernacle Choir (amongst many others).

7” split releases seem to be reducing in number, which is probably due to the high price of pressing them now, so it’s nice to see one in the wild. Heaven Through Violence are up first with ‘Say No Elegies For The Melting Stone’, which is both sassy and screamy. Fast, grinding emoviolence coupled with extended passages of screeching feedback and melodramatic atmosphere spoil you musically. It’s not so much emoviolence in truth as it borrows from an earlier time when post-hardcore was more emotive and less violent (if that makes sense).

Obviously, whenever I make a statement about a band’s sound, there always seems to be a point where it’s proven wrong and that happens in part on ‘Six Are The Walking Ways’. It’s a very short blast of fast screamo that’s bookended by a slow build at the start and a French spoken-word sample at the end, which throws back to mid 2000’s post-hardcore.

Rosemary Nods Upon The Grave are more straightforward in their approach on ‘Every River Will Meet The Sea’ as they join brief bursts of violence with melodic screamo instrumentation and hardcore vocals. When I started collecting vinyl, split releases like this opened my eyes to so many great bands; bands that I still love to this day.

Closing this split out with ‘Every Sorrow Will Have Its Day’, Rosemary Nods Upon The Grave dispense with any dramatic passages in favour of darker yet melodic hardcore. It’s noticeable how they are able to deliver songs that sound much longer than they actually are in reality. The fact that screamo and screamo-adjacent bands continue to produce such engrossing music out of nowhere shows just how strong the DIY/Independent scene is right now.

I'm in the midst of another music buying spree. Maybe it's because the cold nights are starting to draw in again and I'm not already surrounded by enough records! Who knows how long it's going to last. In between catching up on what I have picked up and waiting for what's to come, I'm starting this month off with some good old NYC screamo in the form of olth and their 2023 album Every Day Is Someone's Special Day. 

Originally released digitally by the band, as well as on tape/LP via Larry Records/Zegema Beach Records and on cdr through Partymouse Records in 2023, it has very recently been released on vinyl by Larry and ZBR, while seeing tape and cd represses via Mob Records and Vamonos Tape respectively. Bandcamp recommends olth for fans of Portrayal Of Guilt, G.L.O.S.S., Respire and Chat Pile (to name a few), which is a pretty diverse pool to draw from. 

I must start by apologising for not using the same random capital letters as olth do in their album and song titles. I’m trying to be as efficient with my time as I can be. It’s not often that a screamo album kicks off with a properly lengthy song and the same is true here, as ‘Thinking Of You…’ launches at you with shrieking vocals, manic riffs and an intense low end of bass/percussion. At times it seems to venture into chugging hardcore/sludge realms but that’s fine with me!

The album as a whole is more emoviolence than powerviolence though, as ‘Oh My God I Hate This Feeling, My Heart Won't Stop Beating’ delivers upbeat punk vibes that quickly transition into something that could have be dreamt up by From A Second Story Window and The Body (if they were ever left alone in a room together). 

The two-minute flat ‘Somebody Tell Me, Am I Alone’ hits the spot without going gung-ho. It’s more tempered back, relying on atmosphere, which is actually pretty cool set against olth’s more chaotic songs. ‘Memories Last Forever, So Do Scars’ picks up the pace yet it goes hard on the groovy/danceable tempos before settling back down again. Evidence that olth’s song-writing is already superior, even on their debut!

Right at the album’s midway point, ‘>_<‘ delivers the most expansive auditory experience so far. It’s gentle to build and while olth’s yearning to explode does overspill, the so-called explosion is a controlled one. It’s a glorious way to shine light on the latter half of the album. 

That latter half begins with the vivid yet imaginatively named ‘Looking Through The Hole In My Head’, which after an amusing sample opens out into an unflinchingly great mathcore song. It’s over far too quickly but it leaves a mark for sure. Surprisingly, after such a heavy track, the gentle guitar and spoken word of ‘Song For Jordan’ is perfectly placed. It again gives way to heaviness later on but heralds yet more brilliant song-writing also.

Before you know it you’ve reached the penultimate and (maybe?) tongue-in-cheek ‘Screamo Sucks’, that literally banishes any such notion within seconds thanks to it’s top notch screamo. After sixty-seconds or so it retreats into subtle ambient noise and soft piano, leaving you guessing as album closer ‘The Last Song’ takes over. It’s start/stop, loud/quiet dynamic is employed seemingly at random yet in perfect order too.

Just when you think you’ve heard every possible iteration of a particular musical style (or styles), there’s always another one waiting just around the corner. This evening olth was waiting around that corner and I’m so glad they were. If you missed this album last year, then now is a good time to right that wrong. It’s excellent!

July is a pretty stacked month for new releases from Zegema Beach Records. I've picked a couple out to  try and cover today, starting with AV_Syndrome_0.1 by screamo/emo-violence band Spoiled. Originally released by Spoiled back in 2019, it was later released on tape in 2020 by Larry Records who this time have joined with ZBR to press the record on vinyl, limited to 100 12" copies with various coloured covers. It's close to selling out as well, so get in quick if you want a copy. Spoiled originated in Cyprus and I don't think they're active anymore.

It’s such an exciting time for screamo right now, with new bands constantly appearing and longer running ones still producing excellent music too. Spoiled come at you from the more violent end of screamo and after a gentle intro, opener ‘夢’ flits between intense emoviolence and soothing post-hardcore made up of insane percussion, dissonant/atmospheric guitar work, caustic screams and clean vocals that are a throwback to classic emo. Add a running time of well over six minutes and you won’t find a more epic opening song than this.

‘Desolation, joi’ follows on instantly with much more urgency and almost none of the introspection. Off-kilter and jangly guitar with mathy drums and more frighteningly caustic screams make it unpredictable to say the least. That’s putting it lightly too! In stark contrast, ’11111’ is very serene with piano quietly playing over the top of calming bird song. A great way to allow you to catch a breath or two.

That breath is whipped away once more on ‘胸騒ぎ’ with it’s ringing feedback and ever changing tempos. Spoiled write such good music though that it doesn’t matter how much those tempos change, because in spite of all the aural madness, it all fits together. That’s a hell of a skill for any musician to have. Rounding out AV_Syndrome_0.1 with ‘Skins’, Spoiled use the same approach as they did on the EP opener but this time with larger instrumental passages. It’s once again a mix of violence and beauty that must be heard to be believed. 

What a record! Almost five years on from it’s original release, it seems perfect for AV_Syndrome_0.1 to be available on vinyl, limited as it may be.

Life - Demo Three

It's Monday night, I've just moved through three day weekend that ended with sun (albeit fleeting), fun and family beers/a bbq thrown in for good measure. It's quite apt then that I'm writing about a band called Life tonight, especially given the drag back down to earth I've felt today (thanks day job!). I don't know a great deal about this release other than that it was self-released by the band in 2020, before Russian label Polar Summer did a tape release of it about a year later. It's come to my attention now because Zegema Beach Records along with I. Corrupt Records, Larry Records and Voice Of The Unheard Records recently committed it to vinyl. To date Life has released five demos and an LP.

This demo seems so fitting for this evening and despite not knowing a huge amount about the band, opener ‘Ametic’ sounds right up my street with a heady mix of emo, hardcore and super intense vocals. From doing some research Life may have a link to Sadness (which is utterly welcome if so!) but even if not, this is totally great anyway. 

I really needed music like this after a bit go a shit week in my day job last week. The beauty and majesty of the melody that opens ‘Paroxis’ leads into something altogether more life-affirming when Life’s full intensity hits. The vocals sound more like chorus/gang screams, which are semi-clean and full of volume. The percussion and guitar work is spot on all the time and given that this song stretches way beyond twelve minutes, that’s no mean feat. Introspection isn’t far away as the song’s mid-point shows, but the volume ratchets up once more as the full band’s sound grows ever better.

‘September’ is one of those songs that starts off slowly before picking up pace quickly, exploding into an extreme (almost black metal-like) concoction that bristles with so many other influences. The clean vocals seem to sit on top of everything else when they’re allowed to, as similarly the instrumentation does towards the end. 

Demo closer ‘Lluvia’ features the slowest of slow builds that’s also so chill. Emotional is definitely the word for this. It has got some comparisons to it that I won’t mention here, as there’s really no need too, but what I will say is that as a whole this song is truly beautiful and a great way to end the release. 

This demo clearly passed me by when it was originally released, so I’m thankful that CanaDave at ZBR brought it to my attention recently. Life is way more than just an emo/hardcore band. If the lineage is true, Life will surprise you with the rest of their output so far. Brilliant!

I have a lot to add to my existing review schedule but before I get anywhere near that, I've got the second of two Sadness reviews to write (and the third to feature a recent release from Larry Records). The increasingly prolific US post-black metal/shoegaze band released this untitled EP back in November of last year digitally. Since it's release, Larry Records has dropped (and subsequently sold out of) a limited tape run earlier in January and rumour has it that UK label Hunk Of Plastic will have their own run of tapes  out later this year. Let's get into it...

I love the artwork for this release. It’s simple yet it tugs at my heartstrings when I look at that seemingly sad rabbit, that adorns the cover. EP opener ‘See You In The Orange Light’ points heavily to the artwork. What begins as a peaceful and bright song thanks to it’s melody, takes on a different form when the heavier instrumentation comes into view. With that said though, the use of clean chorus-like singing keeps things bright, while Sadness’s harsh vocals sit deep within the mix. As with Motionless, Watching You that I reviewed a little while ago, Sadness continues to push boundaries further.

There are moments on this EP that remind me of J/K-Pop, such as the bouncing electronic synth melodies that are employed at the beginning of ‘Orange Love’. It’s quite the juxtaposition when held up against the harsh vocals and the guitar/percussion, which are very much in the background. It’s a joy to listen to either way and not at all expected. 

It’s hard to put into words how uplifting this release is. ‘On A Green’, with it’s choral vocals really takes you far away from the premise of post-black metal and into a sub-genre that’s defined only by Sadness. I’m perfectly fine with variation and outside influences when they’re woven into extreme metal like this. I mean, calling it extreme metal at this point it well…pointless. All I know is that it’s genuinely enjoyable.

The song lengths here are not just your usual three-or-so-minutes and thank god for that, with each one so far clocking in at near seven minutes, until closer ‘I Can’t Say Goodbye’ at least. Here, you’re greeted with well over double that. Soothing tones lull you in before Sadness builds up to one more round of subtly dissonant shoegaze and black metal. It gathers up so many layers and textures, which make up something that’s truly engrossing and way bigger than expectations could prepare you for. 

This collection of songs should be played on repeat over and over again, such is the craftsmanship that went into creating it. Sadness once again proves that the deeper you dig, the better the surprises get (in musical terms anyway). Listen to it for yourselves if you don’t believe me.

I've been ordering a lot of records/cds/tapes over the last week or so. You'd think that writing about more music here would make me want to buy more, but you'd be wrong. It's actually a damn good distraction from pulling the trigger in online stores. Discogs states that Sadness has a 35 strong release catalogue, which is astounding given that the project has only been in existence since 2014 (if those stats are correct). My introduction to Sadness came via Avantgarde Music offshoot Flowing Downward, but this is the first time I've featured the band here. This EP was released back in October of last year and is due for a limited tape release via Larry Records very soon indeed!

It’s nearly the end of another week and I’ve been looking forward to sitting down to do this all day. I had another review in mind, but I guess that’ll come tomorrow evening instead. For now, the soothing sounds of Sadness will wash over me. Now, in typical fashion as soon as I say ‘Blue’ is soothing, those tones dissipate. In their place comes heavy, almost crashing instrumentation. The vocals; however, are anything but with clean melody sitting nestled within the music. There are moments here where the instruments take over and the vocals fade, where you may hear distant black metal-like screams (though my ears might be playing tricks on me here). The mid-section of ‘Blue’ is a treat with emo/pop style guitar and melodies swirling all around, but don’t expect those textures to go on forever, as harsh screams do finally overpower the song, even if for brief moments. Joined again by clean singing and towering layers of guitars and percussion, this one song feels like a journey in itself. 

The EP’s second song ‘Your Train Is Leaving’ covers the same trajectory as ‘Blue’, starting out gently and then building up quickly, but this time it’s a much more off-kilter effort with a greater emphasis on black metal. It definitely shows the other side of Sadness. Atmospheric black metal takes many forms nowadays and bands like Sadness are leading the way with their creativity and unapologetic use of pop-sensibilities. ‘Your Train Is Leaving’ is less about those sensibilities yet it still retains a catchiness, especially where the riffs are concerned. Much more metallic and almost akin to post-hardcore at times. It demonstrates the crossover that’s happening between post-hardcore and black metal, even if there are purists that bemoan such a thing. The true atmosphere comes in the last five-minutes, where train whistles and adjacent samples are spliced together with quiet guitar, which sometimes descend into occasional cacophonies of noise. 

They say that beauty (and art in this case) is in the eye of the beholder. As we start to take small and tentative steps towards normality again, the art that we treasure will have the opportunity to touch the hearts of others. In the case of music, bands like Sadness will be there to help cement a place (or a moment) in time. Listening to Motionless, Watching You feels like stepping out into the bright sun for the first time, being blinded by the light before your senses take over. Breathe it in, savour it and go out into the world.

Moongazer - Gone

This review features a band that is new to me and a release that I was due to help promote via a premiere (at least the tape version anyway), but some things don't always work out so I decided I would write about it anyway. Gone is the debut EP from US depressive black metal/blackgaze project Moongazer. It was originally self-released digitally back in July of last year, before seeing a CD release via Mexican label Silentium In Foresta Records (which includes the bonus track 'Rumination'). US label Larry Records picked it up for a tape release shortly afterwards, with the run selling out just as we slid into 2022. With a hint that more maybe coming out later this month, it seems like a good time to give this a spin.

It’s a strange existence that we reside in right now, somewhere beyond normality yet accepting what we have as just that. In uncertain times we find ourselves grasping onto art or possessions that we might not have held so dear before and that certainly counts where music is concerned. Moongazer seems to understand this (whether on purpose or not) and EP (or maybe album?) opener ‘This Wretched Existence’ is aptly presented with both cold extremity and warm melody. Distancing itself from you but also extending it’s hand out in friendship. 

With the use of melancholic guitar, percussion that turns from sensitive to mournfully blasting and vocals that are both ice cold up front, and subtly choral behind, the opener really strikes a chord, as does the piano towards the end. ’ Catatonic’ is an otherworldly piece that features a lot of ambience and noise. It’s unnerving but then I guess it’s supposed to be. Not everything in this life is meant to be comforting. 

Sadness and self-reflection truly prevails on final song ‘Please Don’t Go’. It’s the record’s longest song and as such, it’s most expansive too. Moongazer weaves into it familiar black metal and lighter instrumentation that seems to move between genres. Whatever you feel about black metal and extreme music in general, you’ll be hard pressed to dismiss this release if you’re a genuine music lover. That such beauty and creativity can come from one person, no matter how obscure, is amazing. 

I’m not going to say anything else except listen to Gone and buy it in any format you can. You won’t regret it.
