It's insane how many new-ish screamo bands already have such a pedigree. The community of bands from across the world is continually exploding and it's especially the case in North America. Canada's Drive Your Plow Over The Bones Of The Dead are most certainly one of those bands and they've also been given the discography treatment by Zegema Beach Records recently. In fact, the CDs were made in time for their recent appearance at ZBR Fest in early May.

Drive Your Plow... released their demo back in 2023, before their debut album Tragedy In Catharsis merely a years later in 2024. In 2025, they featured on a six-way split LP and also a bizarre 6-way Christmas 7" single. This CD gathers together every recorded song to date.

This is the second discography I’ve featured in as many weeks and I knew it was gonna be a biggie! It’s a collection of all nineteen songs Drive Your Plow… have released so far. Starting with ‘Spirit Incantation’, which was the lead single and opener on their album Tragedy As Catharsis, you’re greeted with noisy and emotive post-hardcore. The blasting drums are right up in the mix, while the guitars sit deeper when everything’s in full flow. The vocals are mainly raspy screams but there are some low growls hidden in there too. 

It’s probably not going to be the case for many songs here but there’s an instrumental mid-section during ‘Spirit Incantation’, which is measured and excellently delivered. Things get a lot weirder from here, as ‘Glimmer Fate’ demonstrates, when it goes from intense grind to danceable screamo and back. They certainly fit a lot into their music. ’Etchings’ lasts thirty-seconds and after the feedback has settled, you’re left with some mental, grinding mathcore-like noise. I like how this isn’t just straight-up heaviness, as Drive Your Plow… are able to craft metallic riffs and melody into even the shortest of songs. Despite the brief pause between each one, they all follow on as if the pauses weren’t there. 

The guitar tone that opens ‘Perish Song’ is so engrossing, you almost forget that things are about to explode. The way this band switches the mood from hopeful to uneasy is nothing short of jaw-dropping. ‘A Deeper Shade Of Night’ continues along the off-kilter path that’s been laid down so far, but with much more furious percussion, which at times sounds industrial. It’s over very quickly and you’re immediately thrust into ‘Spiteful Enemy’ and it’s The Body-esque emoviolence. It’s actually a lot more hardcore in places, with chunky riffs and backing vocals joining the madness. 

You’d be forgiven for thinking that ‘Suzerain’ was going to be an instrumental before Drive Your Plow… once again drive their auditory plow right into your face. There’s nowhere to hide with this one. You’re just going to have to accept your fate at this point, as ‘Malediction’ carries on the barrage. The sudden stop mid-way through catches you off guard a bit, as some (relatively) gentle guitar is joined by atmospheric screams. It builds again just before the end, before stopping dead.

‘Ritual Symmetry’ has one of the longest instrumental build-ups of any song here so far. It’s a hard one to pin down style-wise as it’s equal parts screamo, punk and even atonal in places. Again, it shows that Drive Your Plow… are able to nail the more engrossing/engaging side of their sound with ease. From one end of the spectrum to the other though as ‘Blood Astronomy’ has no such build-up nor lasts beyond twenty seconds. That being said, there’s still room for tempo changes and dramatic melodies.

By now, the final few songs that made up Tragedy As Catharsis are coming into view. ‘Arrangement’ goes for the panic-inducing grindcore/emoviolence vibe. Wrapping itself around you with everything from fast tempos to driving vocals, before slowing to a sludge-like crawl with meaty stomps. ‘Meadow Rue’ strides along with purposeful abandon, as Drive Your Plow… inject it with an energy that’s much darker than it first seems.

‘Baleful Solitude’ finishes the Tragedy As Catharsis section of this discography in such an iconic way, as it did the album itself. A lengthier piece filled with catchy elements, at least until half-way through when it collapses into a swirl of chaotic noise once again. So utterly intense, it’s hard to put into words.

The rest of this collection is made up of non-album songs, including those that appeared on splits. ‘Arguments In Iron’ was the band’s contribution to the 2025 split that also included Piot., Plein De Vie, TNG, Eris I Disnomia and Jornada del Muerto. It was actually recorded as part of the session for their album, so it carries on the momentum nicely. A clever placing I think.

‘Everdark Conifers’ appeared on another split, which was actually a Christmas 7” single. It’s hard to imagine but Drive Your Plow… joined groups from all genres, including folk, country and electronic. It was recorded in their practice space on a mobile phone. It sounds raw but thanks to some mastering wizardry from Will Killingsworth, it’s also really listenable and nods to their live sound.

Ending with their earliest demo songs is the perfect way. ‘Marionette’ is unflinchingly heavy from beginning to end, even compared to the album’s songs. The guitar work is much more prominent here, especially in the higher ranges. ‘Propitiation’ is equally unabashed, but also more involved emotionally. That maybe has something to do with its song length.

Penultimate song ‘When What Once Worked Suddenly Breaks’ is like the great crescendo. Mixing their violent screamo with spoken-word samples and building instrumentals, there’s a cinematic approach that’s not been heard thus far. ‘Aspected Of Dust’ brings this release to a close with a literal collage of sound, coming from all directions and all adjacent genres. At times depressive but also euphoric.

Discographies like this are a great place to start if you’re new to a band. What could be more convenient than having all their songs in one place. ZBR have done a great job with this one and it leaves you wondering what’s next for Drive Your Plow…, hopefully we won’t have long to wait.

Time waits for no man and it certainly isn't waiting for me! Pelle from dagerman. wrote to me back in March about the release of the band's second album and here I am, writing about it just over a month later. Coming less than eighteen months after debut album tragedie | VIVERE was unleashed, Di fronte a noi il nulla was released digitally by dagerman. and also pressed onto vinyl by a beautiful bunch of collaborating labels made up of Best Life Records (UK), Dancing Rabbit Records (DE), Fireflies Fall (FR), Shove Records (IT) and Zegema Beach Records (USA/CAN).

Last year I wrote about a fair few bands from Italy. A few years ago, I did the same with bands from Finland. I have a tendency to gravitate towards certain countries or styles sometimes. This year’s been a bit more random so far I think and I’m going to try to vary things further. Jumping into Di fronte a noi il nulla, ‘Incarnazione’ brings back the warmth I felt while listening to tragedie | VIVERE. Flourishes of metalcore and hardcore can be heard too, building on the sound of their debut album.

‘Calvario’ has a lot more urgency and intensity compared to the album’s opener. dagerman. give their earliest take on emotive hardcore here. The explosive opening third progresses into a mid-section that’s more subdued and pensive, before the final third explodes once again.

dagerman. have this innate ability to make their songs sound both intense and introspective at the flip of a switch. ‘Lontani da qui’ is the best example of that. The mix of hardcore and introspective, emo-like musicianship is perfect when it’s held up against the vocals, which are very much front and center. 

There’s a mid-section of sorts on this album where dagerman. throw in a couple of shorter songs, starting with ‘Caino’. It’s filled with such gorgeous instrumentation that you’d be forgiven for ignoring how technical dagerman. can be at times, ‘Oltre’ is darker and more unnerving at first, so it’s not a surprise when the quintet’s angular hardcore/screamo takes the lead later on.

‘Oltre’ bleeds seamlessly into ‘Neve’. The percussion especially stands out for me here, as it’s filled with subtle groove and even some funk early on, before the volume explodes once again with the classy bass, melodic guitar work and emotive vocals. 

Penultimate track ‘Immobili’ passes by in waves of post-hardcore/rock atmosphere, bracketed by faster flourishes, in turn creating a dramatic soundscape that carries over into final song ‘Metamorfosi’. It is the album’s longest song and it fittingly show’s off everything in dagerman.’s musical arsenal. Such an epic way to end what’s been a special album.

Once again, there’s such a buzz around Italy’s post-hardcore/screamo scene that shows no sign of calming down. dagerman. might have just released one of the best albums of the year in the sub-genre. Don’t sleep on this.

Wince - Gem (Single Premiere)

Sometimes opportunities present themselves at unexpected times. That reminds me...  I should be better at seizing such opportunities. What am I talking about? The opportunity to premiere (well do a UK premiere at least) for the brand new single 'Gem' from New York, USA post-rock band Wince.

I was supposed to host it via my YouTube channel but I noticed that the single was already up there, so I decided that I'd much rather Wince get the attention themselves. 'Gem' is their first single since the 2023 full-length To Be a Fly in the Rain and it's being jointly released today via Dead Mothers Collective and Cropsey Records.

Wince's music has been described as post-rock and there's definitely nods to that here. They've been compared to the likes of Russian Circles and Holy Fawn due to their ambient, and sometimes experimental nature. There are elements of indie and art-rock in there as well, pointing to a very well-rounded band. 

This is merely a taste of what Wince deliver musically and after listening to their previous full-length via their bandcamp page here, I reckon plenty of you will enjoy them to, especially if you like post-rock, post-hardcore and experimental music. It's been nearly five years since the self-titled full-length from Oregon, USA screamo band Carrion Spring. In between that release and Those We've Lost And Continue To lose, there was an EP that featured three of the songs that made their way onto this album and that made it's way onto tape via ZBR sister label Tomb Tree, albeit in slightly different forms. 

This new LP is available on 250 copies on white/green colour-in-colour vinyl with red and black splatter, which looks stunning as you'll see in the promo pic below:-

The recent four day weekend seems like a distant memory now but I had some great news last Thursday and have managed to order some records I’ve been after for a while, so things are pretty good! I’ve also taken some time to plan my new review schedule for the next few weeks, starting here. This is actually the first time I’ve featured Carrion Spring too (which I didn’t realise until I sat down to write this review). Opening with ‘Abject Disaster’, the quartet’s emotive hardcore sounds very much rooted in the early-mid 2000’s. The instrumentation is a mix of crunching heaviness and lighter melodies, while the vocals are delivered in much the same way. The contrast between harsh screams and semi-clean singing takes me back to when I discovered 36 Crazyfists and From Autumn To Ashes (and it’s not the first time I’ve name checked those bands).

‘Pocket Full Of Poseurs’ sees Carrion Spring employing math-like instrumentation and time signatures alongside more furious percussion to begin with before layering more of their exceptional post-hardcore over the top. As opening salvos go, the first couple of songs have grown in intensity and urgency, as does ‘You Feel Like A Dickhead’. It’s a delight musically. Slightly math-like once again but also aggressive enough to appeal to those who want an instant hit. There are some tongue-in-cheek song titles on this album too, starting with ‘Carrion Phase Springs Eternal’, which may or may not be a respectful nod to US hip-hop/electronic act Wicca Phase Springs Eternal. There’s no hip-hop or electronic music going on here though. Instead, Carrion Spring continue on their emotive hardcore path, channeling their inner Refused/Snapcase influences as they go. 

This is turning into one of those reviews that could grow to mammoth proportions if I’m not careful! ‘Motional’ gives off a solid metalcore vibe at times, but that vibe is only fleeting as gentler instrumentation and singing muscles in later on. It’s the album’s longest song actually, so the varying styles are expected and welcomed. The second song with a witty musical reference is ‘The World Is No Longer A Beautiful Place And I’m Afraid To Die’, which is a play on words inspired by a US emo band. I think you’ll be able to guess the one! If you’re expecting it to be more emo then you’re in the wrong place. This is probably as gritty as Carrion Spring’s sound gets, if I’m describing it right.

The album’s latter half kicks off with the raucous blast-a-thon ‘I’m Not Fighter’, where Carrion Spring just go full-on hardcore on us. This will definitely be one that gets people dancing/moshing when it’s played live. According to the band’s bandcamp page, ‘I’m Not Fighter’ and ‘Paraquat’ that follows are both the same length. That really doesn’t mean anything, I just note stuff like that you know? ‘Paraquat’ is less hardcore and more off-kilter, with more focus on gentler progressions.

‘So Long And Thanks For All The Microfiche’ holds a special place in my heart already because in my first full-time job, I had to use a Microfiche machine. Funny how memories come flooding back when listening to music! It strikes me that if Turnstile wrote heavier music (now at least), they might sound a bit like this. Damn, that’s enough name-dropping! There’s a pattern to this album too, as just like the opening three songs, the closing three get shorter starting with ‘Peacemeal’. There are so many retro feels flowing through it yet it’s still so fresh.

The nostalgia is super strong on ’Supervisionary’ as sumptuous post-hardcore and dual harsh/clean vocals sing in unison early on, before things take a more familiar turn once again. Carrion Spring just know how to pull the right leavers musically. Closing with the title-track ’Those We’ve Lost And Continue To Lose’, Carrion Spring let gentle piano take centre stage in an unexpected instrumental number. This is a grand album. An album that shows Carrion Spring at their very best. I can’t heap anymore praise on them as a band than that.
